Another Reason why Hysterectomy Can be Hell

by Dr. Margaret Aranda

Robotic laparoscopy for hysterectomy or myomectomy can cause death by spreading the cancer as the blade spins like a razor. There's no way to determine whether or not the patient has cancer preoperatively. Go to Change.org to appeal to our Congressmen/women to STOP this manner of spreading stage IV cancer to women, giving them a death sentence.

This is a LOADED issue, but it is a clear-cut one. There is no confusion. Changes have been instituted in other countries, but the place where this started, Harvard's Brigham and Young's Hospital refuses to take a stance against the obvious. Pass it on! Women, we need to stand by this female anesthesiologist Dr. Amy Reed, and help America get back on track FOR Women's Health. Her husband and CardioThoracic Surgeon Dr. Hooman Noorchashm is leading the cause, ladies. We can't leave him without support. He is endlessly fighting for us, and he's a surgeon! A CardioThoracic surgeon! He does open heart surgery, heart transplantations, heart valve replacements, uses the Bypass machine, and probably does lung transplantations, lung tumor removals, and literally holds a heart in his hands several times a week. He shouldn't have the kind of time he has put into this effort on behalf of his wife. Together, they have 6 children.

Do you realize how blessed we are to have Dr. Noorchashm on board for this cause?

Dr. Reed, and anesthesiologist, went in for a robotic hysterectomy by laparoscopy, where the uterus is cut (morcellized) into a few pieces before being sucked up the laparoscope. Well, what happened next is the sin. As the uterus was cut up, pieces of the cancer were spread all around her abdomen. So instantly, she had Stage IV uterine cancer, and had to undergo chemotherapy (now that her uterus is gone). She and her husband have six children, and the impact of what has happened to her is now resonating throughout the world. Her main advocate, and the person behind this Movement, is her husband, Dr. Hooman Noorshashm. What a man, is all that I can say. He now represents the Movement that Dr. West and many others started, having a huge stance that there are too many hysterectomies in the USA. Now, women beware even moreso, because there's no way to know if your uterus is cancerous until after it is ripped to shreds. Or pieces. By then, the cancer cells are already dispersed throughout the abdomen. All over the abdomen.

Normally, if a surgeon opens the abdomen and finds cancer disbursed throughout, it's too late to operate. Sometimes, it is jokingly called, "Peek and Shriek", to keep those of us who are in the O.R. from going insane from the travesty. The surgeon simply closes the incision, we wake the patient up from anesthesia, and the surgeon delivers the bad news to the patient later on. My Women's Health & Fitness Book, Archives of the Vagina, goes over the dismal (in my opinion) statistics of the high rate of unnecessary hysterectomies and ovary removals in the USA. I hope this latest scare, as real and substantive as it is, really makes women just stay away from hysterectomies whenever possible. It's about time. It's long overdue.

As if the rate of hysterectomies wasn't bad enough already, this is a completely new matter of disseminated cancer into the abdomen leaves a woman devastated:

*     After 5 years of morcellation of a leiomyosarcoma, only 15% of women will be alive.
*     After "accidental morcellation", the average lifespan of the woman is only 24 - 36 months.

Some hospitals have actually taken the stance that if you give the woman Informed Consent that the surgeon 'may' spread any existing but undiagnosed uterine cancer, then the surgeon may proceed with the surgery. But seriously? What about the Hippocratic Oath? "Do no harm?" Since when does Informed Consent allow a surgeon to knowingly kill a certain percentage of his/her patients? Because some of the women will have cancer. I am outraged at the unethical, immoral, and self-serving auspices of the American College of Ob/Gyn.

I think all they care about is the money.
It's About Time for women to see things the way they are,
the way they have been,
so women are no longer looking through the looking glass.

Harsh reality is just that ~  harsh.
But we have to face it to change it.
And now, look.

A prestigious, male surgeon has taken a real lead, because it personally affected his wife.
And she's a doctor. An anesthesiologist, like me.
She had no Informed Consent that if she had cancer, it would spread.
Just think of how many times this has already happened to lay people, to women everywhere.
Now, it's out in the open, and it's not going away.
